This reliable test method utilizes a 'lateral flow device' (LFD), an immunochromatographic method that employs antibodies specific for the detection of pecan nut protein. Positive results are indicated by the presence of three lines: a control line, a marker line, and a test line, if pecan protein is present in a range of concentrations from a lower level of 3 ppm to a higher level of approximately 10 mg/ml pecan protein in a saline solution (0.9% sodium chloride). These thresholds may vary depending on the tested matrix. Samples containing more than 10% pecan may result in an invalid test, which is indicated by the absence of the marker line and/or test line.
